He knows exactly what he is. He has known for a long time.

This is the Kaithari double mundu in old rose and gold — a dusty pink kara the colour of a faded temple garland, warm and unhurried, with fine kasavu running along its edges and a deep wine thread sitting quietly beside it. That wine stripe is the detail most people won't notice immediately. Then they look again. And that second look is exactly what this mundu is built for.

The border is more complex than it first appears. Three elements held together with the precision only a handloom weaver produces: the broad old rose kara, the gold kasavu, and that fine burgundy line that gives the whole border its depth. It doesn't shout any of this. It simply rewards attention.

Four metres of fine ivory handloom cotton. He drapes with the ease and weight that only a double mundu carries — gathered, deliberate, entirely at home on a man who has worn one his whole life and equally at home on one discovering it for the first time.

Pair with an ivory or white kurta and let the border carry the colour. Or a simple white shirt, untucked. He is equally correct at an Onam sadya and at a wedding, and he makes no effort about either.

Handwoven in Balaramapuram. Double mundu — 4 metres. Warm, considered, built to be looked at twice.

Care

These pieces are made to last. Here's how to help them age beautifully.

Handloom cotton develops a patina with time — the fabric softens, the drape becomes more fluid, the colours settle into something richer and more personal than the day it arrived. This is not wear. This is the it becoming yours.

First wash: Dry clean only, to set the kasavu and protect the weave.
Thereafter: Hand wash gently in cold water with a mild, colour-safe detergent. Do not wring — press the water out gently and lay flat or hang in shade to dry. Never direct sunlight, which fades the kasavu over time.

Storage: Fold along different lines each time to prevent permanent crease marks. Store wrapped in a soft muslin or cotton cloth — never plastic, which traps moisture. A small piece of dried neem or lavender keeps moths away naturally.

Ironing: Low heat, inside out. A pressing cloth between the iron and the kasavu border protects the gold.A handloom mundu that is worn and washed and worn again will outlast anything in your wardrobe.

Treat it with care, and this mundu will give you decades.
