Kasavu Kaithari Double Mundu — Handwoven Kerala

This is the Kaithari double mundu in multi-stripe kasavu — not a single broad gold band, but six parallel lines of gold zari running the full length of the border, separated by fine white cotton, each thread placed with the precision that only a handloom produces. At the hem, a solid kasavu band anchors the whole construction. Two elements, one border, entirely coherent.

The alternating rhythm of gold and white creates a density that reads differently at every distance — graphic from across the room, intricate up close. This is a mundu that rewards looking at twice, and then a third time.

Four metres of fine white handloom cotton from Balaramapuram. The body is clean, bright ivory, not cream — which makes the gold kasavu hit harder and cleaner.  He is formal without being heavy. Considered without being difficult.

This is the mundu for the man who knows exactly what he is doing. Wear him to a wedding, an Onam gathering, a temple festival. Pair with a plain white kurta or a crisp white shirt — let the border carry everything. He will.

Handwoven in Balaramapuram. Double mundu — 4 metres. Six stripes. One statement.

Care

These pieces are made to last. Here's how to help them age beautifully.

Handloom cotton develops a patina with time — the fabric softens, the drape becomes more fluid, the colours settle into something richer and more personal than the day it arrived. This is not wear. This is the it becoming yours.

First wash: Dry clean only, to set the kasavu and protect the weave.
Thereafter: Hand wash gently in cold water with a mild, colour-safe detergent. Do not wring — press the water out gently and lay flat or hang in shade to dry. Never direct sunlight, which fades the kasavu over time.

Storage: Fold along different lines each time to prevent permanent crease marks. Store wrapped in a soft muslin or cotton cloth — never plastic, which traps moisture. A small piece of dried neem or lavender keeps moths away naturally.

Ironing: Low heat, inside out. A pressing cloth between the iron and the kasavu border protects the gold.A handloom mundu that is worn and washed and worn again will outlast anything in your wardrobe.

Treat it with care, and this mundu will give you decades.
