Mauve Kasavu Kaithari Double Mundu — Handwoven Kerala

He is not a colour you see on a mundu every day. That is the point.

This is the Kaithari double mundu in a dusty mauve-purple kara that sits between lavender and grape, smoky and cool, with kasavu lines running through it that bring warmth to a colour that might otherwise stay quiet. He is broad at the border, unhurried in the body, four metres of ivory handloom cotton that gathers with the weight only a double mundu carries.

That particular blue-purple the flower holds at dawn before the day fully arrives. On ivory handloom, against a white Kerala morning, it reads as one of the most considered colours in this collection.

He is for the man who has worn every other shade of this garment and arrived, finally, here. Wear him with a white cotton kurta with simple ivory buttons and let the mauve at the hem be the only statement. Or a raw silk shirt in pale cream — he holds both. No heavy jewellery. Perhaps a single ring. The kasavu has already done the work.

Handwoven in Balaramapuram. Double mundu — 4 metres. The colour that rewards a second look.

Care

These pieces are made to last. Here's how to help them age beautifully.

Handloom cotton develops a patina with time — the fabric softens, the drape becomes more fluid, the colours settle into something richer and more personal than the day it arrived. This is not wear. This is the it becoming yours.

First wash: Dry clean only, to set the kasavu and protect the weave.Thereafter: Hand wash gently in cold water with a mild, colour-safe detergent. Do not wring — press the water out gently and lay flat or hang in shade to dry. Never direct sunlight, which fades the kasavu over time.

Storage: Fold along different lines each time to prevent permanent crease marks. Store wrapped in a soft muslin or cotton cloth — never plastic, which traps moisture. A small piece of dried neem or lavender keeps moths away naturally.

Ironing: Low heat, inside out. A pressing cloth between the iron and the kasavu border protects the gold.A handloom mundu that is worn and washed and worn again will outlast anything in your wardrobe.

Treat it with care, and this mundu will give you decades.
