She is not trying to impress anyone. She does not need to.
Woven on ivory handloom cotton and bordered in manjal — a broad turmeric yellow, the colour of temple floors and morning ritual, threaded through with fine navy lines that run like rivers through gold. Along the body, the border travels. At the pallu, the stripes cross and settle into a check: that precise, unhurried geometry that appears wherever two good things meet.
What makes her different from every other set in this collection is the mundu. A double mundu — four full metres of handloom cotton - that gathers with weight and falls with gravity. She does not flutter. She does not give easily. When she drapes, she drapes with intention, and the woman wearing her knows it.
She is the Kerala set mundu for the woman who has earned the right to take up space. Wear her with a deep manjal blouse in silk and she becomes ceremony — Onam, a wedding, a day that matters. Or ivory cotton, and let the border carry the occasion alone. Gold jewellery, always. The kind that has been worn before and will be worn again.
Handwoven in Balaramapuram.
